(Collins English Dictionary – Complete and Unabridged)
Old English spelling was mentioned in the 13 November 2010 post “Night burial”, in which we saw Sunni written Sun[n]ee. The case of Surti / Surtee (people from Surat) was also mentioned.
Nowadays the word is mostly written “Hindu”, except in cemeteries where old inscriptions are simply repainted as they have always been written.
It can be noted that Hindu is a word of Persian origin, hindu in Persian (Farsi) meaning Indian (from the Persian name Hind, India).
