Waiting for the bus on May Day

“Restaurant Mermaid” or “Mermaid Restaurant”?

Word order is probably more flexible in English than in French or Creole, but still, “Restaurant Mermaid” doesn’t sound very English. Maybe “mermaid” is to be considered as a French or Creole noun here?

Mermaid, the maid of the sea, la demoiselle de la mer: isn’t this word already half French anyway? (Actually it’s not. The mer– part of mermaid comes from Old English mere, sea, linked to Old Teutonic *mari– or *mori-, and is cognate with Latin mare – SOED.)
