Ce n’était pas tout à fait la pleine lune sur la Mare aux Vacoas. Une grande impression de calme se dégageait cependant de cette scène, peut-être parce qu’il s’agit normalement d’un endroit venteux et que cette fois-là, à la tombée du jour, le ciel pouvait sans peine se mirer dans le lac sous les derniers rayons rosés du soleil.
Les pêcheurs n’ont dû trouver de perle que dans le ciel.

There’s a lovely English word plenilune, pretty much confined to poetry since about 1500, and sparsely at that: the OED picks up uses in Shakespeare, Jonson, Gray, Swinburne, and Joyce, but doesn’t mention Tolkien yet: « With silver tipped at plenilune / His spear was hewn of ebony. »
John, this is a nice word indeed. I’ll try to remember it one of these days, if the occasion arises.
I had a look at the Harrap’s (English/French) to get its pronunciation right and it wasn’t there. It wasn’t in the unabridged Collins either. I then looked into my old copy of the SOED, and there it was:
Plenilune (plīֹnilūn, pleֹni-). Chiefly poet. late ME. [ad. L. plenilunium full moon, prop. adj. of the full moon (sc. tempus time), f. plenus full + luna moon.] a. The time of full moon. b. A full moon. Hence Plenilunal, -lunar, -lunary (…)
They didn’t put plenilunatic though.
I thought that plenilune would have come from French, but it’s not the case since it was borrowed directly from Latin.
To say « the moon is full tonight », would you say « it’s plenilune tonight » or « it’s the plenilune tonight »?
